It’s a holiday tradition 16 years in the making. Each December, the Calgary Hitmen encourage their fans to fling tens of thousands of teddy bears onto the ice during a game for the WHL team’s annual Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss.

And this year was no different.

On Dec. 12, 16,844 fans tossed 23,096 teddy bears during the Hitmen’s game against the Red Deer Rebels at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

A day later, several of the team’s players hand-delivered about 4,000 of the bears to children at Alberta’s Children Hospital. The remaining toys were donated to approximately 60 different charities in and around Calgary.
